What Drives Ansul System Installation Cost in NYC

Every restaurant owner opening a kitchen in New York City asks the same question in the same order: how much, and how fast. The honest answer on cost is that a kitchen suppression system is not priced like a product off a shelf. It is engineered around your specific hood, your specific appliance line, and the specific building you are in — and any one of those can move the number substantially.

Master Fire Mechanical designs, installs, files and services pre-engineered wet chemical suppression systems throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. This page explains what goes into the price so you can read a quote properly instead of comparing two numbers with no idea what is behind them.

The Cost Drivers

Hood length and configuration set the baseline: a single eight-foot wall canopy is a different job than a twenty-foot island hood with two exhaust risers. Appliance count and type determine nozzle quantity and cylinder size, since fryers, charbroilers and woks each carry their own coverage requirements. Duct and plenum runs add nozzles and piping. Then come the shutdowns — a gas solenoid valve, manual reset, and an electrical shunt trip that kills power to the appliances on discharge — which in an older building may require a licensed electrician and a plumber alongside our crew.

Filing, Inspection and the Costs Owners Forget

In New York City the installation is only part of the job. Drawings must be prepared and filed with FDNY by certified personnel, and the system must be inspected and signed off before you can legally cook. Rush filings, re-inspections after a failed first attempt, and buildings that only allow after-hours work all add cost. So does discovering mid-job that the hood itself is undersized for the equipment beneath it, which we would rather catch during the survey than during inspection.

Why the Cheapest Quote Is Often the Most Expensive

The failures we get called to fix follow a pattern: a system installed by someone not certified to file it, drawings that do not match the as-built kitchen, or nozzle coverage engineered for equipment that changed before opening day. Each of those means paying a second contractor to redo work you already bought. Ask any bidder who is filing the job and under whose certification.

Getting a Real Number

We quote from your equipment list and hood drawings, or from a site survey if you have neither. The number we give includes design, materials, installation, filing and inspection support — not a base price with the compliance work billed later. Call (646) 772-1244 to schedule a survey.

Ansul System Cost and Installation FAQs

How much does an Ansul system cost for a NYC restaurant kitchen?

There is no single figure, because the system is engineered to your hood and appliance line. Hood length, appliance count and type, cylinder sizing, duct and plenum coverage, gas and electrical shutdowns, building access conditions and FDNY filing all move the price. We quote from an equipment list and hood drawings, or from a site survey.

What makes one kitchen cost more than another the same size?

Appliance mix, mostly. Wok ranges, charbroilers and large fryers require more nozzles and larger agent capacity than a comparable line of ranges and griddles. Island hoods, multiple exhaust risers and long duct runs also add coverage points.

Is the gas shutoff included in the installation?

It has to be part of the job for the system to pass. A mechanical gas valve with manual reset must close on discharge, and appliance power must drop via a shunt trip. If your kitchen has neither, adding them is part of the real cost and any quote that omits them is incomplete.

Do I need FDNY filing, and is it included?

Yes, and in our quotes it is included. Suppression installations must be filed with FDNY by certified personnel, with drawings matching the system as actually built, and inspected before you can legally cook.

How long does installation take?

Most single-hood restaurant installations are completed within a few days of field work once materials are on site, with the schedule usually set by building access, coordination with gas and electrical trades, and the inspection date rather than by the suppression work itself.

Can I keep my existing hood?

Often yes, provided it is properly sized for the equipment beneath it and in serviceable condition. We verify that during the survey, because an undersized hood will surface at inspection whether or not anyone flagged it earlier.

What does the system cost to maintain after installation?

Suppression systems require a full inspection with fusible link replacement and re-tagging every six months, and cylinder hydrostatic testing every twelve years. We quote maintenance separately and can bundle it with your extinguisher service on the same visit.

Duct and plenum coverage Additional nozzles and piping Every riser and plenum section must be protected
Gas solenoid valve and manual reset Fuel shutdown on discharge Required for sign-off; may involve a licensed plumber
Electrical shunt trip Appliance power shutdown Older panels often require an electrician to add it
FDNY filing and inspection Permitting and sign-off Must be filed by certified personnel with accurate as-built drawings
Building access conditions Labor hours After-hours work, freight elevator windows and COI requirements add time
