ANSUL FILING FDNY

Filing your Ansul Fire Suppression System is a complex matter.

Ansul fire suppression systems are non-water fire suppression systems, often automated so that they work when you or your staff aren’t. As such, its operability needs to be properly documented and filed with the New York City fire department. Your restaurant’s Ansul system (short ANhydrous SULfur dioxide), was originally a preservative and refrigerant before its suitability as a fire suppression agent was discovered.

Your Ansul system needs to be periodically reviewed, inspected and tested prior to being approved for use in your commercial kitchen. It is one of the most complicated filing procedures a restauranteur needs to comply with before being cleared for use. The process is not one that can be trusted to just any fire protection services company.

The process for these systems is two-fold and requires two distinct filings; one at The Department of Buildings (DOB) and the other at the Fire Department of the City of New York. There are fees involved in order for both municipal agencies to review your applications. The first application is for a suppression filing (known in the fire suppression industry as the mechanical portion). The second submission is for the fire alarm filing (the electrical portion).

The process starts by submitting the Alt-2 application Alteration Type II to the Department of Buildings. “Buildings” will issue job numbers, at which point the submission process with the Fire Department can begin. A certified and registered design professional needs to sign of on the completed “Application for Plan Examination/Document Review (TM-1)” forms. These are then processed along to the appropriate departments within the FDNY.

The mechanical portion of the two step Fire Suppression (FP) Filing process involves the fire suppression application, and stamped plans which include hydraulic calculations, and any other supporting information. The applicant will receive an official Letter of approval, along with the approved plans.

If the best fire protection services company isn’t selected to manage the process for you, the result could likely be a Letter of Objection, along with instructions for cure, including the changes required and/or information that is missing or inaccurate.
